Illustration Friday

I wanted to do something for this topic, but this week was a busy one and I hardly had a moment to sketch for myself (have I mentioned I'm doing the Artist's Way?). So I thought I would illustrate this topic using typography. Extra challenge for my lazy brain.

I wanted to post this on my new blog at www.blog.sandradumais.com but my new Wordpress Blog has given me a truckload of grief. This time the server is down (nothing to do with Wordpress - THIS time....but seriously. Huge pain.) so I will be posting again once my blog is back.

In other news, I have been working on posters lately (I have a new alias as a secret poster maker).....and I love it! So fun. I will post some on my new, non-working blog as soon as it is un-non-working.

Night!

Fierce
Has everybody seen the Miley Cyrus photo shoot for Vanity Fair? I'm not sure why, but I found the whole thing kind of interesting. It was a big stink since she is this Disney kid, and Billy Ray's daughter, etc. I don't find it a big deal either way, except I find that Billy Ray Cyrus' hair is kind of creepy.
Well, here is a poster I did recently for a comedy show. I thought the girl looked a little fierce. A bit of a nod to ole' Miley as well as to the old french posters that I have been looking at lately. Posters were so gorgeous back then!

I know it has been a long time since I posted regularly. What have I been doing lately...well, we had a slew of guests staying with us which always distracting in the best way. I sometimes forget how great it is to step away from the computer for greater lengths of time. My friend Erin was here and we rediscovered the Golden Girls. Who knew how hilarious that show would still be!? I always imagine Dorothy with an annoyed look on her face snapping "Ma!" when Sophia makes some inappropriate comment.

I have also been biking lots with Sylvain - we did a trip to Toronto Island where I got my first real photo lesson from the pro. I like the shots that I took -- maybe I'll post them here. I love it over there - all these funny little houses with wild overgrown gardens and hammocks. We thought we might put our names on the waiting list to live there one day. I think the list is like 15 years long, but if we don't do it now we would never have a chance.

Work, as always, is a bit slower these mid-summer weeks and Sylvain and I have once again turned to talking about starting a studio together.
With our resources pooled, we cover quite a bit: photography, design, illustration, web, print, production......plus both official languages! How wicked would that be, a nice little office near our house where we could actually LEAVE the house for work....does anybody else go completely crazy working in the house? Not that I would have it any other way...it's just that there are so many distractions. I almost feel like it's a constant battle to finish the task at hand. Plus little things like, if we had an actual office away from home, I feel like we'd be more likely to buy real office chairs and give our poor backs a break.

It's been a rainy, green summer which is great for the garden! Also for me. I've never been a fan of really hot city weather. And tons of wicked storms. Fierce storms.

Summer is too short.

HOARD

Please click to enlarge!
Wow - it has been awhile since I last posted. I don't know why, for some reason I have been collecting (hoarding?) all the drawings I have done and keeping them in drawers and tucked into books.
This drawing shows all of the various objects that our dog Ernest hoarded today while I was working on my website. He is a retriever and every time I spend any amount of time sitting still, I find a little pile of stuff at my feet. I am really stoned on Sinutab right now and must go to bed. I will post again soon!

Night,
Sandy

Rainy and Thundery
So here I am at 2:10 a.m. sitting at my kitchen table next to a thunder and lightning storm wondering how I expect to get up early for work tomorrow. I am on this weird allergy medication that makes me jittery and really not sleepy. It has been awhile since I posted, cause I have been waiting to launch my new blog with the new website I'm building. But then the website took on a different look and now I'm thinking I'd like to change the face of my blog, so.....well you know how it is. Much easier to design something for somebody else than for yourself. I have always thought it a logical idea to hire somebody else to do all my web stuff. But I just can't let somebody else.
So.
I got a crash course in photography from my husband sylvain a few days ago when we took our wicked new bikes for a long ride on Toronto island. He slept in the grass while I took a couple pics -- most of them were pretty terrible (especially when I decided to practice my food styling and carefully set up the leftover two bite brownies decorated with scattered pumpkin seeds we had in our trail mix....) BUT I did really like these pics I took ::

I have also got tons of things to post, including some Illustration Friday images that I never posted (see above explanation) but still want to share.

I have been screenprinting again, and recently did some shirts up for Sylvain and I (and a couple to my sister Elisha) -- they turned out pretty good but I realized I need really good equipment since alot of my lines are probably thinner than ideal for printing, and the light table I've been using is a bit crap. Anybody know if that makes a difference? Dimmer lights / less light exposure = scratchier and more inconsistent lines? I'm back in the studio on Sunday and plan to do some baby clothes. Apparently all my friends are having kids this year, so I thought I'd start making some good things that aren't 1) pink or blue 2) lame 3) super expensive. If it goes well I'll post some.

Some great links I've been checking out::

Stay tuned for I.F. posting....
